Struggling to keep up in class. The mere mention of the SAT brings on a fountain of tears and shaky hands. Avoiding school.
Does this sound like you or your child? I firmly believe that each and every student can be successful in school-- it's just a matter of finding the learning style that works for each individual. For too long, public schools have used a one-size-fits-all, standardized approach to teaching, but none of us are one size. We are round and square and triangular - all unique in our own ways. By the time many students reach high school or college, they are convinced that they are simply not smart enough to do well in school and they lose confidence as a result. This old way of looking at learning - thinking that IQ determines one's ability to learn (Fixed Mindset)- is the first thing I combat. Once I restore a student's confidence, I give him or her all the tools needed to succeed in his or her academic career.
I love seeing the "light bulb moment" on a student's face, that second where he or she finally masters a concept or subject he/she has been struggling to understand. That moment of realization makes our hard work- both the student's and mine- worth it. It is so fulfilling to work with students on an individual basis. I get to focus my teaching methods in to what each student needs in a way that is difficult to do in my larger classroom settings. I have the opportunity to change the way students perceive themselves (yes, you can write and read well!) and, sometimes, alter the course of their education for the better. My goal is to take students who have fallen through the cracks of the educational system and create lifelong learners out of them. Our kids should love learning and be taught that they can achieve any goal on which they set their minds.

The SAT is more crucial than ever for college admissions. Unfortunately, the SAT board has built tricks into the test, and it is almost impossible to score high without the help of a professional. We will use two prep books that the student will purchase. During 2-3 hour sessions one to two times per week (based on student's schedule and date of SAT), we will learn targeted tricks and techniques to crack each section of the test - Math, Reading, Writing, and Essay. Over the course of the sessions, I will develop an individualized plan for the student based on his/her specific strengths and weaknesses. After the test is taken, I will go over test scores, and we will keep working until the ideal score is reached. All lessons will be planned with your student's unique needs in mind.
The college application process may seem simple, but it can be very daunting, especially when applying to multiple schools. I can help with the process of applying, from assisting with filling out the applications, ensuring the proper materials are sent, and the essay. I know what college boards are looking for, and can help your child have the best chance possible for admission.
I have helped many students apply for scholarships, and can assist your child with selecting the best subject matter for an essay and polishing it to perfection. I can also assist with finding scholarships, ensuring all requirements are met, setting up a calendar with application deadlines, and any other step of the process your child might need assistance with.
Whether you are taking a course in creative writing or just trying to get started on your own, I can teach you many wonderful techniques for content generation, style formatting, story structure, and self-editing. I love putting my years of writing and editing experience to use!
College English (Comp 1301 & 1302, LIT Tech Writing)
Sometimes college can be quite a culture shock. What is expected in high school is not always good preparation for what will be required in higher education. Because I am an English professor, I am well acquainted with the assignments students will be working on in these classes. In one to two 1-3 hour sessions per week, I will go over the syllabus, teach good study skills, help your student develop a study schedule so that he or she stays on track for the semester, explain (or re-teach, if necessary) any concepts they are struggling to understand in the course, teach them skills to master critical reading and thinking skills, and will help them complete and edit daily assignments, quizzes, and essays. I do not write content for students, but instead teach them the skills they need to complete these assignments on their own. I have access to my own textbooks and a wealth of other resources (handouts, etc.) to help your student attain success. I can also help with foundational grammar and with finding alternative methods for students with learning disabilities (I have taught and tutored students with ADHD, dysgraphia, and dyslexia). Writing is an important skill in our online world. I will give your student tools he or she can carry on into the rest of his/her education and even career.
Many college courses beyond English require essay writing. I can help your student develop and edit their essays in almost any subject - Psychology, History, the Social Sciences, Speech, etc. As with my tutoring for English, I will also work with him or her on study skills, critical reading skills, etc.
GED Prep - NEW!
Preparing for the GED can be daunting, especially if you have been out of school for a while. It is a necessary step to securing your future, especially if you want to pursue higher education. Let me give you the confidence you need to fully understand all 4 subject areas and ace the test! We will go over each section in detail, I will teach you any fundamentals you need to brush up on, and give you targeted techniques for test day. One of my current students scored in the 99th percentile on the Language Arts section! Work with me and you'll be a pro in no time.
High School/AP English
High school and/or AP English is where many students start to lose their confidence in their writing skills, or do not receive enough instruction and fall behind. Like College English, I will use my strong teaching methods to help your student work on critical reading and thinking as well as writing skills. In sessions that last anywhere from 1-3 hours, depending on preference and need, I will go over anything the student is struggling with in the course, help develop a study schedule and study skills, explain (or re-teach, if necessary) any concepts they are struggling to understand in the course, teach them skills to master critical reading and thinking skills, and will help them complete and edit daily assignments, quizzes, and essays.
General college prep or study skills
I see many students in my classroom who have had negative experiences during the formative years of their education, and they need encouragement and a different perspective from an educator who is caring, patient, and willing to work with them to find techniques and methods for their individual learning styles. So many kids fall through the cracks of public education's standardized, one-size-fits-all approach to education, an approach studies have shown does NOT work. I have been able to help students overcome academic anxiety, low confidence and interest in school, poor grades, and low motivation. If this sounds like your child, I will work with him or her to improve focus, time management, decrease procrastination, and learn how to use their resources. Anyone can be successful in school; it just takes the correct methods, confidence, and some hard work.
